Tear gas incident at San Bruno school raises concerns about safety protocol | Local news

After a safety training gone awry, members of the San Bruno community are raising health concerns and questioning protocol for testing chemicals used for crowd control at a detention facility less than a half-mile from an elementary school.

On May 21, the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office was conducting a routine tactical response training at its San Bruno detention center when chemicals, including CS gas, a component of tear gas, leaked from an insulated container and entered Portola Elementary School, where nearly 30 children became ill.
