Former Sonoma County deputy sentenced to life in prison, prosecutor says

(KRON) — Ricky Marion Bostic, a former police officer and Sonoma County sheriff’s deputy, was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for rape. Bostic had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of intent to rape and rape of a person while intoxicated, District Attorney Carla Rodriguez said Wednesday.

2007: Criminal investigation by the Santa Rosa Police Department

In 2007, a rape investigation was launched by Santa Rosa police after a victim reported sexual abuse after leaving Club Seven in downtown Santa Rosa. Bostic was watching people leaving the club when he decided to follow the victim to her home in Juilliard Park and rape her unconscious, prosecutors said.

When the victim woke up, “she immediately realized she had been attacked” and reported the rape to authorities, prosecutors said. Despite a forensic examination, nearly 14 years passed before the victim’s DNA matched Bostic’s, the SRPD said.

Bostic had moved out of Sonoma County when he was identified as the rapist in 2021, but prosecutors said he was employed as a deputy with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office at the time of the rape in 2007. Bostic was off-duty at the time of the rape, prosecutors said.

On August 27, 2021, Prosecutor Rodriguez filed the following charges:
• Assault with the purpose of committing a crime during the commission of a first degree burglary
• Rape of an unconscious person
• Burglary

2013: Criminal investigation and conviction in Maryland

In 2013, Bostic was working as a security guard for the Greater Baltimore Medical Center when he pleaded guilty to attempted malicious prosecution in connection with an earlier burglary, Baltimore County District Judge Kathleen Cox said.

In the 2013 incident, Bostic was caught sneaking into the home of a woman who was sleeping on a couch. Police arrested Bostic after he attempted to flee and later sentenced him to 50 years to life in prison, prosecutors said. Bostic has been in custody in Maryland since his first arrest in 2012, the SRPD said.

2024: Moving forward

“This was a predatory attack on an incredibly vulnerable victim. We hope this conviction and sentence finally provides closure for the victim and her family,” said DA Rodriguez. Following the prosecutor’s comments on the sentencing, the court stated that Bostic “deserved the sentence he received and more.”

To date, Sonoma County law enforcement has not discovered any other victims whose DNA profiles match Bostics.

Bostic worked as a police officer with the Petaluma Police Department between May 1998 and April 2001. Bostic also served as a deputy sheriff with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office between April 2001 and May 2009. Bostic then worked as a security guard in Maryland before being convicted in 2013.
