Jeremy Renner stars in “Knives Out 3,” the first film since the snowplow accident

Jeremy Renner, welcome to the Knives Out film universe. He is the latest star to join the cast of Rian Johnson’s crime thriller Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.

Other possible suspects in “Knives Out 3” include “Fleabag” actor Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, “Challengers” star Josh O’Connor and “Priscilla’s” Cailee Spaeny. And of course, Daniel Craig will reprise his role as the quirky detective at the center of the action, Benoit Blanc.

Plot details have not been revealed, but Johnson promises that the third installment in the crime series will be Blanc’s “most dangerous case yet.” The first installment, released by Lionsgate in 2019, follows Benoit Blanc as he tries to find out who killed famed crime writer Harlan Thrombey, who died on the night of his 85th birthday.

Blanc takes on an entirely new case in the sequel, “Glass Onion,” which will be released by Netflix in 2022, about a tech billionaire who invites his closest friends to a private island for a murder mystery. It should be noted that Renner is not complete new to the “Knives Out” franchise. The actor’s likeness (in the form of a fictional brand of hot sauce) plays a key role in the plot of “Glass Onion.”

After the first film grossed a solid $312 million on a $40 million budget, Netflix bought the rights to the crime series for more than $450 million. The sequel ran briefly in theaters before landing on the streamer. Netflix has not announced any release plans for the third installment.

Renner, best known for his role as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has made a triumphant return to acting following a snow plowing accident in January 2023 in which he suffered blunt chest trauma and 30 broken bones. He is also known for “Wind River” and “The Bourne Legacy.” Renner currently stars in the Paramount+ series “Mayor of Kingstown” with Taylor Sheridan.

Deadline was the first to report the news of Renner’s casting.
