Lawrence man sentenced to prison for sexually abusing 21-year-old woman

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – A Lawrence man will spend the next five years behind bars after being convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a 21-year-old woman.

Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez said Romeo Martinez, 23, of Lawrence, was sentenced to 66 months – five and a half years – in prison on Wednesday, June 5.

Court records show that the sentencing followed Martinez’s conviction for sexually motivated aggravated assault of a then 21-year-old woman.

“The survivors did not allow fear to stop them from seeking justice,” said prosecutor Valdez.

According to court documents, Martinez pleaded no contest in May and was sentenced to 36 months probation and must also register as a sex offender for 15 years.

DA Valdez said the charges are based on an incident on December 5, 2022, in which Martinez assaulted a woman in her home. No further information was provided.
