Teenager killed in altercation outside Big 5 Sporting Goods in Renton

A 17-year-old man was shot and killed outside Big 5 Sporting Goods on Grady Way in Renton shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.

According to Renton police, three 17-year-olds were on their way to Big 5 Sporting Goods when they got into an altercation with a 51-year-old man in the parking lot.

According to police, a physical altercation ensued in which the 51-year-old shot the 17-year-old.

King County Sheriff’s officers were conducting a drill nearby and heard the gunshots. Officers immediately attempted to rescue the boy, but he died at the scene.

“This just goes to show that we are truly facing a crisis and an epidemic with this gun violence in our communities across the country. A 17-year-old lost his life tonight,” said Meghan Black, Renton’s spokeswoman.

The 51-year-old shooter is cooperating with the police.
