Broken Arrow police release body camera footage showing man arrested on parking violation

Broken Arrow police released bodycam video Wednesday after arresting a man for illegally parking on his cul-de-sac street.

The video shows Richard McMahon slamming the door in the officer’s face as the officer tried to speak to him, leading to his arrest for resisting arrest.

Some neighbors say McMahon is harassing them for no reason and calling the police.

McMahon told News On 6 on Wednesday he could not give an interview until he spoke with his attorney.

“Hey, I’m investigating a traffic violation, you don’t have the right to do that,” an officer can be heard saying on the video.

Broken Arrow Police officials say McMahon called police first because someone else was parking illegally. But officials say McMahon was the one who parked his car across the dead-end street and wouldn’t let people pass.

“He was parked legally,” an officer can be heard saying on the body camera footage. “You were not parked legally when I came by, so I need to see your driver’s license so I can issue you a ticket for blocking the roadway.”

“I didn’t block the street,” McMahon can be heard saying on the body camera footage.

The video shows a struggle between McMahon and the police officer while the officer handcuffs him.

“I never resisted you from the beginning,” McMahon can be heard saying in the video.

“Yes, you did,” said the officer.

“They beat me,” McMahon said.

“It’s all on the body camera, sir,” the officer said.

“Yes, it is,” said McMahon.

The officer says on the video that they were called to McMahon’s house several times because he had called the police about his neighbors

“I hate that guy,” the police officer can be heard saying on the video. “I hate Richard McMahon. I don’t care.”

Chyanne Armstrong lives next door and says McMahon often called the police because she let her children play in her own front yard.

“After the police left that day, he stood in his yard, in his backyard, yelling at my son, telling my four-year-old son that he was going to die soon because his mother didn’t know how to take care of him,” Armstrong said.

According to records, three restraining orders have been issued against McMahon in the past 11 months, including one last week.

He is also accused of violating protective orders in seven cases, assault and damage to property, and resisting state authority.

Armstrong hopes more will be done to ensure the safety of neighbors.

“We want our children to be able to play outside without having to worry about them getting hurt or run over,” Armstrong said.

Broken Arrow Police are still investigating this incident and say the officer was placed on routine leave.
