Atlanta United takes over in 2nd half and shuts out Charlotte Independence

A high-rotation Atlanta United side faced an early setback in the eighth minute when recovering center back Stian Gregersen was forced off the field due to a concussion protocol issue. His replacement was Noah Cobb, a product of Atlanta’s academy and who has recently seen significant first-team minutes.

The first half was pretty leisurely, save for a few dangerous free kick opportunities in Charlotte’s favor, but tons of possession and half-chances from the Five Stripes. However, Atlanta United found themselves lucky due to the lack of video review when Ronald Hernandez brought down Obregon Jr. just inside the box in the 38th minute. Despite the close call, the referee signaled a free kick rather than awarding a penalty.

Although they dominated possession and generated numerous chances, Atlanta United struggled to convert their superiority into goals, a recurring theme in recent matches. Atlanta enjoyed 67% possession in the first half and made nine shots to Charlotte’s three, but they failed to find the decisive goal.

Charlotte’s back five and low block defensive setup presented significant challenges for Atlanta’s attackers, who struggled to finish clinically in the final third.

Charlotte, on the other hand, seemed content to absorb all the pressure and attempt to strike on a counter. A slippery pitch caused several players to lose their footing, and Charlotte nearly took advantage early on after an Atlanta corner was played at midfield. The last defender slipped, leaving Charlotte in a 1v1 against goalkeeper Josh Cohen, but Independence wasn’t urgent enough to set up the shot in time.
