92-year-old man survives dog attack in West Ashley

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCBD) – A 92-year-old man is recovering today after being attacked by a dog in his own front yard Monday night.

He was discharged from hospital this afternoon and is being cared for by his family as he faces a long road to recovery.

Freddie Lambright Sr. was taking out his trash and as he turned to go inside, “this dog came running. He didn’t stop. He came right at me.”

Lambright, who just turned 92, says the attack was barely noticeable.

He was in survival mode.

He remembers that the dog once dragged him into a ditch in front of his house. “I pushed him away and tried to get him away from me. He just kept coming closer.”

Although he was injured, Lambright said he was grateful it wasn’t worse.

“I was afraid he would try to get at my throat, and if he did that, I would be gone.”

His life flashed before his eyes.

His daughter Vanessa had just left the house when she received a call about the attack.

“They called back and said the injuries were so severe that he needed surgery,” Vanessa said.

Lambright was treated for his injuries at MUSC and went home today in good spirits. He says it is his faith that keeps him going.

“I appreciate all that my neighbor and my church family do, and especially what the Lord has done and continues to do,” Lambright said.

While Charleston Police are investigating the case, we were told it would be up to a judge whether or not to euthanize the dog.

It will be a long road to recovery for Freddie, but Vanessa says the family is behind him.
