Dutch riot police broke up a pro-Palestinian demonstration at an Amsterdam university early Tuesday, arresting about 125 people in sometimes violent clashes, authorities said.

“Police intervention was necessary to restore order. We see the footage on social media. “We understand that these images may seem so intense,” police said.

Firecrackers fired at police officers

Local media showed protesters shooting fireworks at police officers, but there were no immediate reports of injuries on either side.

“Everything is quiet now… the police remain near the Roeterseiland campus,” police later said on X.

Outgoing Education Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf said universities were a place of dialogue and debate and he was sad that police had to intervene.

Student protests against the war and academic relations with Israel gradually spread throughout Europe, but remained on a much smaller scale than in the United States.

Last Friday, police in Paris entered the prestigious French university Sciences Po and removed student activists who had occupied its buildings.

More than 100 students are occupying Ghent University in Belgium in both a climate and Gaza protest that they plan to extend until Wednesday.
