Huge police vehicle in a Texas city causes a stir – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

The Prosper police are causing a stir with a huge emergency rescue vehicle.

The police department posted a photo of the armored personnel carrier on its Facebook page on June 1 and invited the public to come and see it.

The post quickly raised questions that the police department answered. At the top of the list was, “How much did it cost?” The police department said the vehicle was purchased at no cost to taxpayers, as the $689,000 armored vehicle was acquired through the federal 1033 program, meaning it cost the city nothing. Some readers pointed out that the federal funds still come from taxpayers.

Next, the police department pointed out the versatility of the vehicle. “It is designed for flood rescues (rescuing many people during the flooding last week), shootings, hostage rescues and other critical incidents, ensuring the safety of our officers and the public,” the department wrote.

The police department further touted the rescue vehicle’s ability to help neighboring communities in growing Collin County and encourage civic engagement.

The department said use of the vehicle would continue with an annual renewal agreement.
