Police kill suspected gunman in killing of workers at Delaware senior living facility – NBC10 Philadelphia

Law enforcement authorities in Delaware are investigating after Delaware State Police officers shot and killed a gunman on Tuesday, shortly after he allegedly killed an employee at a Dover retirement home.

According to police, the incident began when a 51-year-old man from Camden, Delaware — whose identity police did not release — visited a relative who lives at the Harmony at Kent senior living facility in the 1400 block of East Lebanon Road in Dover around 5:25 p.m. Tuesday.

According to officials, the man had been denied access to the property in the past due to what investigators called his aggressive behavior.

In a statement, police said the man and his female relative were accompanied from the facility by a 59-year-old employee. Police did not provide any further information about him either.

Outside, the man hit the employee, officials said, and ran to his vehicle in the parking lot, where he grabbed a gun.

The man then fired a shot at the vehicle of one of his male relatives who was driving through the parking lot, aimed and shot the employee.

After the shooting, the man and his relative remained near his vehicle in the parking lot when police arrived at the scene, officials said.

State police officers then attempted to negotiate with the shooter, officials said, before he allegedly raised his weapon, at which point officers shot him.

Both the shooter and the employee were taken to a nearby hospital where they died from gunshot wounds they sustained in the incident, police said.

State police officials said the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave pending a use-of-force investigation conducted jointly with the state Department of Justice.
