Major emergency operation at Welsh school after “serious incident”

A 14-year-old girl has been taken to hospital after a “serious incident” at a Welsh school sparked a major emergency response this morning (Wednesday 5 June).

The incident occurred at around 10:40am at St Julians School in Newport. Police, paramedics and a rescue helicopter were on scene.

The school has since confirmed that a “medical emergency” was the reason for the operation and that the girl has now been taken to hospital.

An email from the school to parents said: “We had a medical emergency on school premises this morning involving an individual student. The parent of that student has been notified and is present.”

A Gwent Police spokesman said: “We received a report of a medical emergency at St Julian’s High School in Newport at around 10.40am.”

“Officers were present, along with staff from the Welsh Ambulance Service and the Welsh Air Ambulance.

“A 14-year-old girl was taken to hospital for treatment.”

A Newport City Council spokesman said: “A student at St Julian’s School has experienced a medical emergency.”

“The emergency services were on site and the students were taken to hospital. The parents were informed that there was no major danger to the students and that they did not need to take any action.”

“As part of this emergency, we had a rescue helicopter, an ambulance and the police on site. The situation has now returned to normal.”

“All students and staff are safe.”
