Indiana child care worker arrested for infant death

Brittany Baylor was charged with aggravated assault resulting in death and neglect of a second person resulting in death.

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — A southern Indiana child care worker was arrested Tuesday on felony charges after police say a child died in her care nearly two years ago.

Brittany Baylor, 35, a Jeffersonville resident and home child care provider, was charged with aggravated assault resulting in death and neglect of a dependent person resulting in death.

In July 2022, Jeffersonville Police requested assistance from the Indiana State Police in investigating a case involving an unresponsive six-month-old baby found in Jeffersonville, according to an ISP press release.

Rescue workers initially took the child to Clark Memorial Hospital, but then transferred him to Kosair’s Children’s Hospital (now Norton Children’s Hospital) in Louisville. The baby died the same day.

ISP Detective Mike Bennett led the investigation. He interviewed the baby’s parents and Baylor. He also spoke with pediatricians and attended an autopsy conducted by the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office. The final autopsy report stated that the child’s death was due to a closed skull injury sustained during an attack.

Detective Bennett presented his findings to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office in September 2022. The District Attorney’s Office turned the report over to Norton Pediatric Protective Services doctors for review. The press release stated the report was returned to Detective Bennett in May 2024 and the Clark County Circuit 4 District Court issued a warrant for Baylor’s arrest on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

Baylor was arrested without incident Tuesday evening and taken to the Clark County Jail.
