Oceana County Sheriff provides update on fatal accident at Silver Lake Sand Dunes

GOLDEN TOWNSHIP, Michigan – On the day the family announced funeral services for Kadie Price, Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast told FOX 17 that a possible mechanical problem on the modified Jeep that caused her to lose control may have played a major role in her death.

Mast explained how popular Silver Lake’s sand dunes are, attracting nearly two million visitors each year.

Many of them go drag racing, which is what Price and her family did on May 26.

Mast said drag racing is legal and statistically safe. Mast said the sheriff’s office there deals with several injuries each week, but rarely deaths. In fact, there haven’t been a single one since the start of last season until Price’s death.

That’s why Mast calls it a “crazy accident.”

According to Mast, a car went off the track and crashed into the crowd, killing Price. The car had “adequate safety features,” according to Mast, and was heavily modified, which is common practice.

He said speed, loss of control and possibly the mechanical problem contributed to the crash. Mast did not elaborate on what might have been wrong with the vehicle, but said alcohol was probably not a factor.

Investigators are still awaiting the results of the toxicology test on the 64-year-old driver, who Mast said is cooperating.

Mast added: “If there is one thing to focus on, it should be a mother’s love.”

Price, 33, managed to push her two-year-old daughter out of the danger zone and bring her to safety shortly before impact.

Price’s life will be celebrated next week. An obituary on the MKD Funeral Home website states: “Relatives and friends may meet the family on Wednesday, June 12 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the MKD Stegenga Funeral Chapel, 1601 Post Drive NE, Belmont.”

A celebration of life will be held the following day at 11 a.m. at Ada Bible Church, 1640 E. Paris SE, Grand Rapids.

A spokeswoman sent FOX 17 the following statement, provided by Price’s family:

“Our family is truly grateful and touched by this overwhelming support.

“We all knew Kadie as a loving wife and passionate mama bear, but she was also a wonderful daughter, sister, granddaughter, aunt, niece and cousin.

“The greatest gift is family, and Kadie made that her number one priority. Her world revolved around her children. Many of us will try to fill that void, but we all know that a mother’s love is irreplaceable. To all the special mothers out there, get out from behind the camera and take pictures with your children. Maybe one day, that will be all they have left of you.

“Please pray for the McCool and Price families.”

To support Price’s husband and two children, a GiveSendGo page has been set up and has already raised over $100,000.

As for the investigation, Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon would file any charges. He told FOX 17 he does not have the report yet and will not release it until everything is complete, given the seriousness of the situation.
