1 dead, several in hospital in head-on collision in Playa del Rey

At least one person is dead and three others are in critical condition after a head-on collision in Playa del Rey on Tuesday evening.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the collision between the two vehicles occurred shortly before 8 p.m. in the 8800 block of Vista Del Mar.

When rescue workers arrived at the scene, they found several injured people. One person was found dead in a destroyed vehicle.

Three others were taken to hospital in critical condition. At least two of the passengers had to be freed, officials said.

Among those transported were a 30-year-old woman, an 18-year-old girl, an 18-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy.

Sky5 video from the scene showed a blue sedan and a white SUV with heavy damage. The blue sedan was a total loss and appeared to be the vehicle from which emergency responders were in the process of extricating passengers.

Large amounts of car debris were scattered on the road that runs parallel to Dockweiler Beach. The road remains closed because a large police presence was on site.

The circumstances of the fatal head-on collision remain unclear. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
