Atlanta Braves News: Atlanta adds piece on the field, update from Sean Murphy

The Atlanta Braves added some bench depth after the club signed veteran Brian Anderson to a major league contract on Tuesday. Over the weekend, Anderson, 31, opted out of a minor league deal with the Seattle Mariners.

Anderson spent most of his career in Miami, where he split his time between third base and right field. He owns a career batting average of .252 and will primarily be used as depth infield.

To make room on the 40-man roster, Tyler Matzek was moved to the 60-day injured list.

Tucupita Marcano will be banned for life from MLB after betting on baseball.

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Keynan Middleton will undergo flexor tendon surgery and miss the remainder of the season. Middleton had yet to pitch for the Cards this season.

The Houston Astros have acquired minor league reliever Nick Hernandez from the San Diego Padres. In exchange, the Padres will receive money.

The Boston Red Sox have placed outfielder Wilyer Abreu on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right ankle. This decision is retroactive to June 3.

Houston Astros right-hander Cristian Javier will undergo Tommy John surgery on Thursday. It will probably return during the second half of 2025.

The Washington Nationals have placed right-hander Trevor Williams on the 15-day injured list with a strained flexor muscle. Williams won’t be able to pitch for at least the next two weeks.

Former Atlanta Brave Julio Teheran will join the Baltimore Orioles on a minor league deal. He will report to Triple-A Norfolk.

The Miami Marlins designated outfielder Avisail Garcia for assignment Tuesday.
