Driver charged with drunk driving and open container after crash on Highway 115

A Clarkesville driver is facing charges after she rear-ended another vehicle on Highway 115 Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

The two-vehicle crash west of Clarkesville occurred on June 4 shortly before 1 p.m. The impact caused one vehicle to fall down an embankment, where it overturned.

According to the Georgia State Patrol’s preliminary accident report, both vehicles were traveling northbound. One of the vehicles was stopped and waiting to turn left onto Heartland Drive when a vehicle driven by Angel Stewart struck it, troopers say.

Stewart, 38, “slammed on the brakes and swerved to the right,” striking the stationary vehicle, the report said. “It slid onto the shoulder and down an embankment and overturned.”

The GSP report does not make it clear which vehicle overturned or if there were any injuries. Now, Habersham has requested additional information from the Habersham County Public Information Office, but no one has responded.

State police charged Stewart with drunken driving, tailgating and possession of an open container.

The accident temporarily closed both lanes of traffic and occurred in the same area where a Toccoa man was killed in a crash last week.
