Janitor finds handgun ammunition outside Connecticut middle school

Police are investigating after a janitor found a pistol magazine containing ammunition outside a middle school in West Hartford on Tuesday.

According to Captain Daniel Moffo of the West Hartford Police Department, officers responded to a complaint about found handgun ammunition at Bristow Middle School at 34 Highland Street around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police learned that a janitor found a pistol magazine while performing his daily duties outside of school, Moffo said.

“West Hartford Police Department and West Hartford Board of Education personnel took immediate action to ensure the safety of students, faculty and community members,” Moffo said.

Bristow Middle School was secured as officers, assisted by a sniffer dog, searched the school. No firearms, weapons or threatening items were found, according to police.

According to police, several classes were on a field trip on Tuesday, so the school was not fully occupied.

“West Hartford Board of Education staff will ensure that students who are off school property during this incident undergo a secure search before returning to school property,” Moffo said.

“The West Hartford Police Department and its members take incidents like this very seriously, as the safety of our community is our primary concern,” Moffo added. “We encourage parents and community members to talk to their loved ones about notifying police immediately if a firearm or firearm accessory is found.”
