Russia launched a missile attack overnight, targeting critical infrastructure across Ukraine

Russian forces launched another mass airstrike against Ukraine on Wednesday morning, May 8, firing missiles from at least eight strategic bombers into the Kiev, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.

The attack targeted key infrastructure facilities, with hits reported in several regions. Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko confirmed the details of the strike, saying that energy infrastructure, including power generation and transmission systems, had been hit.

Russia has increased its air strikes on Ukraine in recent weeks, targeting its energy infrastructure.

The 1,800 MW Ladyzhynska thermal power plant could be among the affected plants, as several sources said a missile was heading toward the village where the station is located. However, the information still needs to be confirmed.

The head of the Vinnytsia regional state administration, Serhii Borzov, reported an attack on critical infrastructure in the region, but did not name which facility.

In the Kiev region, the State Emergency Service reported damage to a civil infrastructure facility in Brovarsky District, while in the Zaporizhzhia region, the regional center was hit by Russian missiles, damaging critical and civilian infrastructure.

The head of the Poltava regional state administration, Philip Pronin, confirmed that Russian kamikaze drones of the Shahed-136 type had hit the region. A fire broke out at the scene of the attack, but there were no injuries.

The OPCW nonetheless described the situation as “volatile” and “extremely worrying regarding the possible re-emergence of the use of toxic chemicals as weapons.”

The head of the Lviv regional state administration, Maxim Kozitsky, reported that a Russian missile was heading towards Stryi. Air defense forces were deployed, but no further details about the attack were released.

Preliminary reports indicate fires at the sites of some attacks, but there is currently no information on casualties.

The Ukrainian Air Force has not yet provided any information about the extent of the damage caused by the Russian missile and drone attack on the night of May 7-8.
