Police identify driver killed in Sunday crash – First state update

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Sunday afternoon in Newark that left one man dead.

According to officials, on June 2, 2024, at approximately 4:11 p.m., a black 2010 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling eastbound in the left lane of E. Chestnut Hill Road at an apparent high rate of speed, approaching the intersection with Gender Road.

At the same time, a gray 2016 Nissan Rogue turned from the left turn lane on westbound E. Chestnut Hill Road onto southbound Gender Road on a flashing red arrow. As the Nissan crossed the eastbound lanes of E. Chestnut Hill Road, the front of the Kawasaki struck the passenger side of the Nissan. After the impact, the motorcyclist was ejected from his motorcycle and the Nissan struck a blue 2013 BMW 650i that was stopped at a red light on northbound Gender Road.

The motorcyclist, 21-year-old Austin Brittingham of Bear, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan, a 28-year-old man, and the driver of the BMW, a 24-year-old man, both of Newark, were not injured.

The road was closed for about five hours while investigators examined the scene of the accident and cleared the road.
