The “Grease” actress who played Patty Simcox was 72 years old

Actress Susan Buckner, who starred alongside Olivia Newton-John in the film musical “Grease,” has died. She was 72.

Buckner, who played sassy cheerleader Patty Simcox in the 1950s teen drama, died Thursday “surrounded by loved ones,” the actor’s rep, Melissa Berthier, confirmed to People magazine and Entertainment Weekly.

A cause of death was not given.

In “Grease,” Buckner’s character Simcox was a good friend of Australian student Sandy, played by Newton-John. Released in June 1978, the film grossed nearly $160 million at the worldwide box office and became a pop culture classic.

Buckner got her start in show business in 1973 as a sketch actress on “The Dean Martin Show.” She made her screen debut in 1976 as a dancer in the musical comedy “The First Nudie Musical”.

After the success of “Grease,” Buckner made guest appearances on the TV series “BJ and the Bear,” “The Love Boat” and a 10-episode episode on “When the Whistle Blows,” according to the actress’ IMDb page.

Buckner also starred in the 1981 Wes Craven-directed thriller Deadly Blessing alongside Maren Jensen and Sharon Stone.

Buckner is survived by her two children, son Adam Josephs and daughter Samantha Mansfield; her four grandchildren; her sister Linda; her daughter-in-law and son-in-law; and her longtime partner Al, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

“The light she brought to every room will be forever missed,” Buckner’s daughter Samantha said in a statement to People magazine. “She was magical and I was so lucky to call her my best friend.”
