A ride-share driver shoots a naked man who was seen attacking a woman in OC.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, a ride-share driver shot and injured a naked man as he allegedly attacked a young woman outside an apartment complex in Stanton.

The incident occurred at 7:49 p.m. Sunday when the driver had just dropped off a passenger in the 7100 block of Custer Way, said Sergeant Matthew Parrish, sheriff’s department spokesman.

The driver, he said, saw a naked man hitting a woman and rolled down the window to shout at the man to intervene.

“This drew the attacker’s attention to the driver and he began to approach the vehicle,” Parrish said. “At some point, the shooting occurred.”

He said investigators are looking into what led to the shooting and whether the man was under the influence of drugs or experiencing a mental health crisis. The investigation will also determine whether the driver had a gun license and whether the naked man could face charges, if any, authorities said.

A witness living in the area told ABC7 he saw the man attack the woman before the shooting occurred.

“I saw the man hitting the woman, he was on top of her, hitting her,” he said. “So I yelled out the window and said, ‘Hey, let her go,’ ran out and when I ran out I saw him hitting the car, but he was completely naked.”

Parrish said the ride-hailing driver stayed at the scene and reported the shooting to a sheriff. Arriving officers discovered a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound and began life-saving measures until firefighter paramedics took him to the hospital. The man was in critical but stable condition.

The woman, also 20 years old, was treated for minor injuries sustained in the attack and released at the scene.

The ride-sharing driver was questioned by investigators and later released. Authorities did not disclose which ride-sharing company the man worked for, but other news outlets reported he worked for Uber.

Parrish said the department is withholding the suspect’s name for now. The department also did not identify the driver or the young woman.
