2 people arrested after attempting to steal a van in Kendall and fleeing from police

KENDALL, Florida. – Two men were arrested Tuesday morning after fleeing from police in Kendall, authorities confirmed.

Cedric Antoine Johnson, 38, and Deverick Kimble, 37, both of Miami, are charged with attempted grand theft auto and malicious damage to property.

According to the suspects’ arrest reports, Miami-Dade Kendall District Police officers received a call around 2:50 a.m. about a car break-in in progress outside a home in the 14100 block of Harrison Street.

According to police, an officer responding to the call approached the suspects’ black BMW with his headlight, after which the driver drove around the marked police car and fled the scene.

According to reports, police officers pursued the BMW without their blue lights and sirens on and requested air units for support.

According to police, an air unit followed the BMW until it parked in the area of ​​Northwest 11th Avenue and 55th Terrace. There, Johnson and Kimble got out and ran west.

Both men were arrested a short time later.

According to reports, the men were observed by the victim in his work van attempting to steal the vehicle.

According to police, the suspects gained access to the van by breaking the passenger side door handle and destroying the steering column cover to start the engine.

Police said both men exercised their right not to speak to investigators and were both taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
