A rapist who filmed his “sadistic” attack on a defenceless homeless woman moaned in the dock after being found guilty.

Liam Stimpson, 24, attacked his 40-year-old victim in the early hours of December 27 last year after spending Boxing Day in Cardiff drinking heavily to celebrate his birthday.

After befriending the woman and promising to buy her food, he drove her under a railway bridge where he forced her to undress before launching the brutal sexual assault.

A video taken on Stimpson’s cellphone shows the woman’s bleeding and severely swollen face as she sobs into the camera: “Please don’t hit me, I have children.”

Stimpson was heard to reply: “I’ll tell you what to do. I’m the boss.”

Jurors heard that the victim spent several days in hospital after the attack, suffering a broken nose and injuries to his head and wrist.

Stimpson was found guilty of two counts of rape: inducing a person to engage in sexual activity without their consent and intentionally causing grievous bodily harm.

Prosecutor Nicola Powell said: “He beat, humiliated and degraded her because of his own sexual perversions.”

Judge Jeremy Jenkins said Stimpson’s “callous” and “sadistic” attack justified a lengthy prison sentence.

A man has been sentenced to prison for the rape of a woman in Cardiff city centre. CCTV and mobile phone footage shows Liam Stimpson raping and brutally attacking the victim in the early hours of Wednesday 27 December 2023. Stimpson, of Llanrumney, Cardiff, denied four offences including rape and grievous bodily harm but was found guilty by a jury at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday 30 May. Stimpson had been celebrating his 24th birthday when he attacked the woman under the railway bridge between Callaghan Square and St Mary Street. The attack continued despite her managing to run away while screaming for help. Two key witnesses, a bar cleaner and a delivery driver, intervened and police were called. Within half an hour of his call, Stimpson was arrested in Caroline Street and has been in custody since then.

“You recorded this incident for your own sexual gratification, as a kind of trophy to watch at your leisure or to show to others. It shows a woman naked, abused, bloody and in agony,” he told him.

“You degraded and humiliated her and forced her to crawl like a dog while you filmed it. You completely humiliated her and took away her last bit of dignity.”

The judge sentenced him to 15 years in prison and ordered him to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Stimpson screamed and cried in the dock as the verdicts were announced.

He cruelly claimed that the encounter was consensual, forced his victim to testify, and accused her of encouraging “role play” and “acting for the camera.”

Stimpson told jurors: “She suggested the role play, she suggested I record it.”

“She knew she was being filmed and she went all out for the camera.”

He told the court: “She could have left of her own free will at any time.”

The father-to-be turned to his parents and his girlfriend in the stands and cried: “It wasn’t me. I love you.”

Detective Inspector Katherine Barry said: “Stranger attacks like this are extremely unusual in Cardiff, but in Liam Stimpson we were dealing with a dangerous individual.”

“The level of violence he used and the humiliation he inflicted on the victim were horrific. He is an absolute danger to women.”

“We would like to thank the witnesses who responded to the press appeal and those who courageously gave their statements.”

“We would also like to express our thanks to the victim support worker who provided invaluable support to the victim and the investigation.”
