Information about the City of Wichita cybersecurity incident

In case you haven’t heard, the city of Wichita experienced a ransomware attack earlier this week. Due to the attack, some services were affected.

Here’s a guide to what you might want to know. If you plan to visit the city’s website, first make sure you use the https prefix. For example, type (or copy) the following: https://www.wichita.gov/

Cyber ​​security incident update

Below are updates to our frequently asked questions about the cybersecurity incident. Please visit http://www.wichita.gov/Alert for all current updates.

The Information Technology Department and its security partners continue to work around the clock to resolve the cybersecurity incident. Many city systems are down as security experts investigate the source and extent of the incident. There is no timeline for when systems might come back online. We appreciate your patience as we process this incident as quickly and thoroughly as possible. Incident recovery information and frequently asked questions are as of the date of the most current information release.

When will this incident be resolved?
Employees are working diligently and will resolve the cybersecurity incident as quickly as possible.

When will we know more?
The City strives to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Public safety:

Are there any impacts on public safety operations?
No impact is expected on residents requiring public safety assistance. WFD and WPD respond to service requests and utilize paper reports.

Water:

Are water systems at risk in any way from the cybersecurity event?
No. All water systems are safe and functioning normally.

How do I pay my water bill?
We will not suspend water accounts during the cybersecurity incident. Those who have had their water shut off can present their payment or proof of payment at City Hall and their water will be reconnected. Anyone who has difficulty paying their bill will not face penalties or late fees until the cyber incident is resolved. Bills can still be paid in cash at the town hall or by mail. Customers who would like to set up a new water account can do so at City Hall. Automatic payments are suspended for the time being.

How do I reconnect if my water is turned off?
We will not suspend any water accounts during the data breach. Those who have experience with a water shutoff can present their payment or proof of payment at City Hall and their water will be reconnected.

transit:

How do I get a bus ticket or how do I pay the bus fare?
Residents can use Wichita Transit by paying cash.

City seller:

I am a salesperson for the City of Wichita – how do I get paid?
For more information, please contact your City of Wichita representative.

Park and Recreation:

Can I still book a course, tee time, etc. through Park and Recreation?
All golf and recreational activities can still be paid for by check or cash at the town hall or at the location of the course or recreational activity. The Parks and Recreation app is also still available and working.

City licenses:

Can I pay or receive a license via the C?ity?
Licenses can be paid for and purchased at City Hall.

City meeting:

Are city council, committee and other advisory board meetings streamed?
Although we will make every effort to continue streaming any previously streamed public meetings or media events, at this time please plan to attend all City meetings in person.

Landfill:

Are landfill operations still operating?
The landfill currently only accepts cash.

Arts and Culture:

Are cultural institutions affected?
The city’s cultural institutions, including CityArts, Cowtown and Indian Museum, can hold events as scheduled, but payments will only be accepted in cash or check. Century II, Botanica and the Wichita Art Museum are not affected.

District Court:

Is the district court still in operation? All scheduled appointments will go ahead as planned. There are currently no tickets available.

What happens if I have to pay a fine in the local court??
Payments to the district court can be made in person. Currently only cash and checks are accepted.

Airport:

What impact does this have on the airport?
There is no public WiFi available at the terminal and the arrivals and departures screens are not currently working. The flights are running normally.

Library:

Is the library open?
Public WiFi is available at the following locations: Alford, Angelou, Rockwell and Westlink branches and Libby. Staff may check out materials, but checking in materials, pulling handles, and transferring materials between locations may be interrupted. We are a fine-free library, but will monitor accounts to ensure no other fees are charged during this time. Public WiFi is not available at the following locations: Advanced Learning Library, Evergreen and Walters branches. Other services that may be affected include: staff email across the city network (if you email us, we may not be able to respond during this outage), the library website, most databases, including Kanopy, LinkedIn Learning, etc., the online catalog, the self-service print release stations, the self-check stations, the automated materials processor in the Advanced Learning Library – enter returns into the manual book drop-off, most incoming phone calls are possible.

Resource Centers:

Are neighborhood resource centers still operating?
WiFi and phones are currently unavailable. Unless otherwise stated, all scheduled event services are operational.

Planning:

Is Planning still able to process cases?
All planning activities continue. Payments can be made in cash or by check.

MABCD:

Is MABCD operational?
No disruption to MABCD activities is expected.
Housing:

What is the impact on housing and community services?
Currently, staff are working as best we can to serve those who need assistance with housing and community services. Staff will contact those requiring service as quickly as possible.
