Firefighters on high alert as heat increases in East Bay – NBC Bay Area

Cal Fire crews were able to bring a rapidly spreading grass fire under control near Altamont Pass on Patterson Pass Road in Livermore on Monday evening. Crews were able to contain the fire to 115 acres, preventing it from endangering surrounding homes.

“These highly flammable fuels, these grass fires, burn very quickly and are then usually extinguished pretty quickly,” said Cecile Juliette of Cal Fire.

Now they are turning their attention to the next few days and the possibility of further fires throughout the region.

“There will be more fires like this in the rolling hills of the Bay Area,” Juliette said.

One of these fires is the Corral Fire, which broke out near the Lawrence Livermore Lab on Saturday, burning thousands of acres of land and requiring evacuations in the area.

A Tracy man is coping with the loss of his parents’ home of 30 years, which was destroyed in the fire.

“There was a knock on the sheriff’s door and they were told they had to get out. They grabbed their dogs, their turtle, some clothes, but they forgot medicine and other things,” said Travis Custis.

And as temperatures continue to rise in the coming days, Cal Fire will be keeping a close eye on the situation as it could be a summer of wildfires.

“Our firefighters are familiar with the weather and wind conditions and generally know what times of day are most likely to result in a fire being reported,” said Juliette.

Cal Fire reminds everyone to sign up for safety alerts to receive notifications of evacuation orders.

However, with the heat approaching, they are definitely keeping a close eye on weather conditions.
