Calls for greater safety on the roads after a series of fatal incidents over the weekend

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The first weekend of June saw a series of fatal incidents here in Hampden County.

Calls for more safety on the streets after a deadly weekend in Hampden County. Two violent incidents occurred within a matter of hours in the city of Springfield.

On Saturday night, Springfield police officers found a man with gunshot wounds on Central Street. He later succumbed to his injuries and 62-year-old Juan Rivera of Springfield was arrested in connection with the incident.

“It’s scary. You never know who you’re living next to and what’s going on behind the door,” says Joel, who lives in Springfield. “I think that should make you more cautious.”

On Sunday morning, police were called to Marion Street for a domestic dispute. There they found two women stabbed and a man seriously injured. Osamah Al Kherat is now in police custody and is considered a suspect. Both suspects have been brought to court and are accused of murder.

Springfield saw a record number of murders last year – and as for domestic violence, Mayor Sarno says it is difficult to predict and stop.

In a statement, Mayor Sarno said he will allow the Springfield Police Department and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office to continue their investigations to resolve these tragic incidents and will also look into whether the arrested suspects have a criminal history.
