A man has been sentenced to prison after filming himself brutally beating and raping a “homeless” woman under a bridge during a party celebrating his birthday.

Liam Stimpson, 24, is said to have isolated the “vulnerable” 40-year-old woman under the pretense of buying groceries for her before carrying out the “sadistic” attack under the remote bridge at Cardiff Central station.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that Stimpson filmed the “humiliating” attack, which took place on December 27 last year after a night of vodka drinking, on his mobile phone and showed the court footage of the “disgusting attack”.

Prosecutors described how the woman begged her attacker to stop before she was stripped naked, beaten and raped twice.

According to local media reports, the woman was homeless.

Stimpson denied the allegations and claimed the woman allowed him to film the incident as part of a “role play” after he paid her for oral sex.

However, the jury disagreed and found Stimpson guilty of four separate crimes, including rape and grievous bodily harm.

A jury had previously found Stimpson guilty of another count of intentional grievous bodily harm.

Judge Jenkins, presiding over the case, sentenced Stimpson to 15 years in prison at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday 3 June.

“You have completely humiliated her – you have stripped her of every last shred of dignity,” Judge Jenkins told Stimpson.

He described the attack as “bordering on sadism”. The jury was shown cellphone footage of the victim holding her hands up and pleading: “Don’t hit me, baby, please don’t hit me. I have children.”

Video footage showed the couple walking to Bakers Row before returning to St Mary’s Street and parting ways.

Stimpson was then heard to reply, “I’ll tell you what to do. I’m the boss.”

During the trial, the court heard how a bar cleaner and a delivery driver intervened in the incident and called the police.

Within 30 minutes, the force arrived at the bridge and arrested Stimpson, who was remanded in custody.

Det Insp Katherine Barry of South Wales Police described the footage as the “most shocking and heinous” crime she had seen in her entire 21-year career.

“The fact that the jury was subjected to this disturbs me because I have never experienced anything like this before,” she said.

“It was sadistic, it dragged on, this woman was humiliated, and that will stay with me for a very long time.”

“We relied heavily on the citizens who intervened and who I believe probably saved her life and who were able to provide more information about his movements.”
