Taiwan’s president recalls the incidents on Tiananmen Square on social media

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has posted a message on social media commemorating the events in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

On Tuesday, he wrote that he was commemorating the “35th anniversary of 64,” referring to China’s crackdown on pro-democracy protesters on June 4, 1989.

He said a country that is truly respected is one where people can speak loudly. He said every government must courageously face the voice of the people, especially the younger generations.

He emphasized that people could only be truly protected through democracy and freedom.

He wrote that the memories of ’64 will not disappear with the passage of history. He said Taiwan will continue to make efforts to ensure that the memories of this history remain in people’s hearts for a long time to come. He said Taiwan will also work to move the hearts of all people who are aware of democracy in China.

He said Taiwan has evolved from authoritarianism to democracy thanks to the sacrifices and contributions of its predecessors. He said Taiwan will continue to join forces to deepen its democracy and create a better world in cooperation with countries with similar principles.
