Rochester man killed in crash on I-71 in Richland County

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP – A Rochester, New York, man was killed in a one-car crash on Interstate 71 in Richland County Monday afternoon, the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Mansfield Post reported.

Nanda Gurung, 56, was taken by ambulance to Ohio Health Mansfield, where he succumbed to his injuries, the patrol said.

The incident occurred at 4:58 p.m. near mile marker 164.6 in Jefferson Township.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling northeast on Interstate 71. The Chevrolet veered off the left side of the road and struck a railing.

The vehicle oversteered and struck a bridge wall, causing it to roll over. The Chevrolet then crossed the median and came to a stop in the southbound lanes of Interstate 71.

The left lane of southbound Interstate 71 was closed for approximately two hours during the accident investigation, but all lanes are currently open.

The Washington Township and Jefferson Township fire departments and Laurence’s Towing assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
