Taunton school crossing guard charged with attacking parents, then confronting news crews in court – Boston 25 News

TAUNTON, Mass. — A Taunton school crossing guard was fired Monday after allegedly attacking a mother and her child with a stop sign stick. The man subsequently confronted several news crews outside his arraignment.

Louis Chaves, 68, of Taunton, is charged with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon (a portable stop sign baton).

According to a police report, a woman and her daughter were driving through an intersection in front of Taunton High School around 7:30 a.m. when the woman sneezed and stopped her car.

She claims Chaves then walked to her passenger window and began yelling at her. The argument escalated when Chaves held his stop sign through the passenger window and waved it around, hitting the woman and her minor daughter while yelling profanities, the Taunton police report states.

“He (swear word) hit me with the stop sign stick!” the victim is said to have told the police.

Chaves then allegedly struck the victim’s vehicle with the sign. The victim then got out of her car, and authorities say a physical altercation ensued, with Chaves allegedly continuing to attack her with the sign before throwing her to the ground and kicking her.

According to officers, they found several cuts on the victim’s arms.

According to Taunton Public Schools, Chaves was fired immediately after the attack.

After his indictment, he became involved in a confrontation with several news agencies, including our own.

The video shows Chaves pushing the camera away as officers try to get him to comment on the assault allegations.

Our photojournalist remained unharmed during the encounter.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Chaves was arrested Monday evening on suspicion of assaulting members of the media. He will appear in court on those charges on Tuesday.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates as more information becomes available.
