Man convicted in 2020 Frayser shooting that killed his grandmother

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – A man has been convicted of murder and attempted murder in connection with a shooting in Frayser in May 2020. Police say the shooting killed an innocent bystander – a woman who was holding her grandson at the time.

According to court records, a Shelby County jury convicted Darrell Peterson of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder (two counts), use of a firearm during a felony (two counts), and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.

Peterson will learn his fate when the verdict is announced on July 1, 2024. He is also accused of aggravated assault in another case.

Prosecutors said a group of women were involved in a fight in the 4000 block of Knob Drive in Frayser on the afternoon of May 16, 2020. They said two of them began breaking windows of a home and some of those involved had bats and knives. They said the fight was live-streamed on social media.

Prosecutors said Peterson eventually drove up, yelled at people in the crowd and then fired several shots.

Investigators said Patricia Draper Bryant, 55, was in her yard two houses down, holding her young grandson, when she was shot in the chest. She died in the hospital.

The public prosecutor’s office said the fight started after an argument on Facebook.

Two women were also charged with vandalism in connection with the incident.
