A suspect who fled from police and caused a fatal traffic accident was shot and killed by an officer in Ontario on May 5, according to the Ontario Police Department.

The incident began at 10:30 a.m. when officers responded to the 400 block of West Maple Street for a disturbance. The caller told dispatch that his sister’s ex-boyfriend had threatened to enter the house if the sister didn’t come out. The caller stated that there had been incidents of domestic violence and threats with a weapon in the past.

Officers found the suspect in his vehicle and began to negotiate with him, but he refused to get out. The suspect had an arrest warrant and was ordered by officers to submit to arrest. He said he wouldn’t go to prison and fled the scene.

The suspect led officers on a high-speed chase along surface streets and also drove the wrong way on a highway, showing complete disregard for public safety, police said.

The suspect then collided with a motorist near Grove Avenue and Philadelphia Street, resulting in a multi-vehicle collision.

The suspect fled from his vehicle and allegedly attempted to carjack a motorist. He then ran armed with a handgun toward the area of Cucamonga Avenue and Philadelphia Street, where an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect received medical attention and was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A pistol was later recovered from the scene.

The two innocent drivers involved in the traffic accident were treated at the scene and taken to a hospital. One driver was released with minor injuries and the other driver was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The identities of the deceased will be released by the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office once notifications are completed.

The shooting is being investigated by Ontario Police in coordination with the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office as part of a parallel investigation.
