Some Grateful Dead music to celebrate the 47th anniversary of 8/5/77

To mark the 47th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s legendary 8/5/77 concert at Barton Hall, there will be no Cornell Chimes concert this year, head bellmaster Elisabeth Wang tells us, but a downtown Ithaca store is promising live music for the occasion , and we can enjoy past chimes concerts online.

JEMaginations Crystals, Art & Jewelry is hosting a “grand reopening party” on Wednesday at the previous location of Sunny Days and Uncle Toddy’s IthacaN Flea Market at 215 The Commons, while also celebrating Grateful Dead Day with live music performances from 3 to 8 p.m., including Dead -Cover by RageChill, Jake Penna and Sam Money.

Sunny Days itself has moved a few doors west and is now located at 171 East State Street, near the playground at the Commons, where the company celebrated its 10th anniversary a few weeks ago.

As for the Cornell Chimes, these days they have a less rigorous schedule and no public access to the public in McGraw Tower while the Uris Library undergoes renovations.

The Cornell Chimes played their final anniversary concert last year on 8/5/77, just before the Dead & Company concert on 8/5/23 at Barton Hall, which raised over $3 million for MusiCares, a nonprofit organization that supports the music community, and Cornell 2030 Project, a university-wide initiative “that mitigates the real-world impacts of climate change.”

Even though there is no Cornell Chimes concert for Grateful Dead Day this year, there is still plenty of music on campus! Wednesday is Slope Day, Cornell’s annual year-end celebration. This year A Boogie Wit da Hoodie and Flo Rida will be performing. (Only members of the Cornell community can attend the show.)
