Biden is expected to issue an executive order to partially suspend the processing of asylum applications at the border

President Biden is expected to issue an executive order by Tuesday partially pausing the processing of asylum claims along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The decree would reportedly allow U.S. immigration authorities to deport migrants who have entered the United States illegally without formally processing their asylum claims and assigning them a court date.

CBS News reported that the expected executive order would rely on a presidential authorization called 212(f), which gained notoriety during the Trump administration when it sought a “travel ban” on certain Muslim-majority countries.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson had previously said the Biden administration could slow the flow of migrants crossing the border into the U.S. by issuing executive orders, noting that the president had ended many border measures that former President Trump had put in place by executive order to curb illegal immigration.

Johnson was asked on Sunday for his opinion on Biden’s expected asylum decree.

“Now it’s too little, too late,” he said. “He’s desperately trying to show the American people that he wants to address the problem he created.”

Johnson reiterated that Republicans in the House of Representatives have “documented 64 concrete actions” taken by Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas since 2021 that he said have led to a crisis at the border.

“They did it on purpose. It has had catastrophic effects on our country that we will live with for decades to come,” Johnson said.
