Arrests and Violence in San Jose Cinco de Mayo – NBC Bay Area

San Jose police said Tuesday that the city’s Cinco de Mayo celebrations last weekend “were largely successful and the majority of community members and visitors legitimately enjoyed this cultural celebration that has been a tradition in San Jose for decades.”

But there was still plenty to keep police busy, including two stabbings on Sunday night.

The department said it received more than 2,100 calls from Friday to Sunday. Officers discovered multiple misdemeanors, felonies, reckless driving accidents, side deals and other quality of life crimes that required enforcement action to keep the peace.

Police said Tuesday that they made 17 felony arrests, 52 misdemeanor arrests and 18 warrant arrests while patrolling areas affected by the celebrations.

Police seized eight vehicles and confiscated six firearms.

Police said the sanctioned events were peaceful and the family events were well attended.

“However, there were a large number of independent, disruptive visitors in the city who sought to create unsafe conditions for our officers and the public,” police said. “Among many other matters, SJPD investigated an incident involving two stabbings resulting in life-threatening injuries, numerous physical altercations, multiple sideshows throughout the city, an alcohol-related vehicle accident in which the intoxicated suspect driver collided with a patrol car, injuring our officer, and assaults on patrol officers.” officers, vandalism of patrol cars and several arrests for firearms.

Police said they implemented multiple traffic diversions to ensure public safety and communicated expected closures well in advance and again communicated the closures in real time on our social media platforms as the diversions were implemented. Once public safety was restored, traffic diversions were lifted.
