Syrians attack Israeli embassy in Romania, no connection to Gaza war

A Syrian man was arrested in Bucharest after throwing a Molotov cocktail at the Israeli embassy in the Romanian capital and then attempting to set himself on fire, local broadcaster Digi24 reported on Monday.

The 34-year-old suspect “pulled out a Molotov cocktail, lit it and threw it at the entrance door of the building’s lobby,” the Israeli embassy said.

The Molotov cocktail caused a small fire and caused no casualties, local media reported, citing local police. The suspect also tried to set himself on fire, reports said.

The man was initially arrested by anti-terror officers from the Romanian secret service before being taken into custody by police who will investigate the attempted attack on the embassy.

Romanian police: Attack has no connection to Gaza war

Police spokesman Georgian Drăgan told Digi24 that the incident had no connection with the Israeli military’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, but was motivated by personal grievances.

According to Bucharest police, the man was “unhappy that he had not been granted a residence permit” in the country.

The Israeli embassy on site thanked the Romanian authorities for their intervention in the incident.
