Two dead and several injured after gun violence broke out across Philadelphia over the weekend

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A weekend of chaos and gun violence in Philadelphia left at least two people dead and many others injured.

The first incident occurred on South 58th Street shortly after 11:30 p.m. Friday.

According to police, a 29-year-old man was shot multiple times in this incident. His condition was stable and he was taken to hospital.

In this case, no arrests were made.

The next shooting occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of West Hunting Park Avenue.

According to police, a 28-year-old man was shot twice in the stomach. His condition was stable and he was taken to hospital.

Residents of the city say they abhor the ongoing violence.

“Philadelphia should really be ashamed. We are not the city of brotherly love. We don’t seem to know how to handle this,” said Maurice Massenburg, who has lived in the city his entire life.

“It’s a shame,” Massenburg added.

In the next incident, a man was killed when a shooting involving four people occurred in the Cobbs Creek neighborhood of Philadelphia.

It happened shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday in the 900 block of 58th Street at Baltimore Avenue.

Officers arrived at the scene due to reports of a person with a weapon.

Upon arrival, police learned that two victims of the shooting had been taken to a hospital in private vehicles.

The first victim, a 23-year-old man, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead in hospital.

The second victim, a 20-year-old man, was found to be in stable condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.

Officials said the last two victims, both 20-year-old women, had been shot multiple times and were in stable condition.

Investigators are trying to find out if anyone was the target of the attack. So far, no arrests have been made in this case.

Shortly thereafter, police began investigating a suspected traffic shooting that left one person dead in southwest Philadelphia.

It started shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday in the 2400 block of South 62nd Street.

Officers were called to the scene due to reports of a person with a weapon. Upon arrival, police found three gunshot victims.

The first victim, a 21-year-old man, was shot multiple times and later pronounced dead. The second victim, a 22-year-old man, was shot once and is in stable condition.

The third victim, another 22-year-old man, was shot multiple times and is in critical condition.

Investigators believe the incident turned violent following a car crash involving a suspect and the three victims.

“Apparently the occupants of both vehicles were armed. At some point one of the occupants started shooting at the others,” said Inspector DF Pace.

The cause of the accident is unclear. Police say a male suspect is in custody in connection with the incident.

“It’s just repetitive. We don’t seem to hear the alarm. What are these young people thinking? Life is precious. God gave it to us and we just throw it away,” commented Massenburg.

On Sunday evening, three people were also shot in downtown Philadelphia.

According to police, the shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. at the corner of 11th and Ludlow Streets. The area is not far from Jefferson Hospital and the Fashion District.

Investigators said at least four shots were fired from a 9mm weapon.

According to police, a 22-year-old man was shot twice in the arm, a 53-year-old woman was hit in the knee and a 42-year-old woman was shot in the pelvis and arm.

The woman was taken to Jefferson Hospital in critical condition.

Representatives of the Philadelphia Anti-Drug/Anti-Violence Network (PAAN) are concerned about gun violence in the city and fear it could get worse as temperatures rise.

“If you have a problem, call PAAN. We can try to resolve it for you in a respectful manner so you don’t have to worry about going to jail or harming anyone,” said Harold Boswell, an attorney for PAAN.

He says PAAN works hard to protect others from gun violence.

“It’s sad, man. These families have to deal with this trauma,” Boswell noted.

Boswell and the town’s residents now hope that local politicians will intervene before it is too late.

“It’s time for Philadelphia to face reality,” Massenburg said.
