Shooting in Ohio leaves one dead and 24 injured

AKRON, Ohio — An early morning shooting on an Ohio street left one person dead and 24 others injured, some seriously, police said.

Police said shots were fired in Akron shortly after midnight early Sunday, leaving several victims hit by gunfire. Local hospitals notified emergency dispatchers shortly afterward that people with gunshot wounds had been brought to the emergency room.

Captain Michael Miller, a spokesman for the Akron Police Department, said Sunday morning that there were 25 total victims, including one person who died. Miller said Sunday afternoon that at least two injured people were in critical condition.

No immediate arrests were reported. Police asked anyone with information to call Criminal Investigation.

WEWS-TV reported that a street party was taking place in the area before the shooting. An anonymous witness at the scene told the station that hundreds of people were having fun. Everyone was wearing white T-shirts and “women were dancing on top of cars.”

The broadcaster reported that officers found dozens of cartridge cases and a firearm.

Wisconsin director announces resignation

MADISON, Wis. – The warden of a troubled Wisconsin prison will resign later this month.

Waupun Correctional Institution Warden Randall Hepp announced his resignation Tuesday, the Wisconsin State Journal reported. The newspaper obtained an email Hepp sent to prison staff in which he wrote that his decision was not easy but that he believes it will benefit the institution.

State Department of Corrections spokeswoman Beth Hardtke told the Associated Press on Sunday that Hepp actually announced his retirement, not his resignation. She did not respond to a request for a copy of his Tuesday email.

A chronic shortage of guards forced the state Department of Corrections to impose a lockdown in Waupun and at the Green Bay and Stanley prisons.

Inmates at Waupun filed a federal court lawsuit in October claiming conditions amounted to cruel and unusual punishment. By late November, Stanley resumed normal operations, and movement restrictions were eased in Waupun and Green Bay. According to the Department of Corrections’ last update in April, in-person visits had not yet resumed at Waupun and recreation was still restricted, but inmates were issued electronic tablets that allow them to make phone calls and send emails and text messages.

Britt Cudaback, spokeswoman for Governor Tony Evers, said in March that federal authorities were investigating an apparent smuggling ring involving employees at the Waupun Correctional Institution.

Since June 2023, four inmates have died at Waupun. One committed suicide in solitary confinement, one died of a fentanyl overdose, and another died of a stroke. The fourth inmate was found dead at the facility in February. His death remains under investigation.

Dances on the Gila River interrupted after shooting

SANTAN, Arizona – The Gila River Indian Community has issued a temporary ban on dancing after a tribal police officer was fatally shot and another was injured while responding to a reported disturbance at a Santan home, tribal officials said Sunday.

Stephen Roe Lewis, governor of the tribe south of Phoenix, said a special meeting of local council leaders was held Saturday evening.

The council has agreed to a temporary moratorium on all permitted and prohibited dance events in the municipality and has also imposed stricter penalties for trespassing and disorderly conduct, he said.

The FBI in Phoenix is investigating the shooting.

The Arizona Republic reported that the shooting occurred at a teenager’s birthday party.

Joshua Briese, 24, who had been with the Gila River Police Department for less than a year and had not yet completed his on-the-job training, arrived at the scene around 2 a.m. Saturday along with another tribal police officer on a disturbance call.

According to police, several shots were fired and both officers were hit. Four other people were injured, one of whom later died.

Briese was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the other officer, whose name has not yet been released, is in serious but stable condition, according to police.
