Premiership: Police involved in incident at Jonny Hill after riot in semi-final: Planet Rugby

English lock Jonny Hill has been reported to police following an altercation following Sale Sharks’ Premiership semi-final defeat to Bath.

The 29-year-old was accused of putting one of his fans in a headlock, causing him to suffer a cut above his eye and broken sunglasses.

Hill has not played since January after suffering a serious injury during a Champions Cup loss to La Rochelle, but was present at the Rec to cheer on his teammates.

Second-tier club Sale have since confirmed they are investigating the incident and released a statement shortly after reports of a dispute emerged.

The statement

“Sale Sharks are aware of an incident involving a Bath Rugby player and a fan at the final whistle of today’s semi-final,” it said.

“The club will work with Bath Rugby to investigate the incident and will not comment at this time.”

The fan involved in the brawl, who wishes to remain anonymous, was questioned about the altercation and described the incident according to his opinion.

“I was sitting there and he came down the stairs, grabbed me by the neck, broke my sunglasses and cut the top of my eye. He was like saying to me, ‘Don’t ever do that again,'” he said.

“Honestly, I just want a new pair of sunglasses. It’s not about football. I was sitting with my partner and her whole family (Bath fans). We were Worcester fans. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it.”

How and why Hill intervened is unclear, but Sale supporters complained on social media about abuse from Bath fans during Saturday’s Premiership semi-final.

Sharks players also supported their teammate, including prop Si McIntyre, who played in the game and insisted that the “story was made up.”

“Raising awareness of the calibre of rugby is good for the game and is welcomed. However, rugby’s values are based on respect so salacious headlines only detract from the skill on display today. This story is fabricated. Congratulations to @BathRugby,” he wrote.
