Today: Detroit man arrested and charged after attempting to give money to ISIS

A Detroit man, Jibreel Pratt, was arrested and charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization, according to a statement issued by U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison, in conjunction with Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Detroit Field Office.

Pratt, 25, is charged in an indictment detailing allegations that he attempted to provide cash and payment to ISIS on two occasions in March and May 2023. The FBI arrested Pratt at his Detroit home early this morning, and his first appearance in U.S. District Court is scheduled for today. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has said it intends to seek pretrial detention for Pratt because of the danger he poses to the community and the risk of flight.

“The indictment alleges that the defendant attempted to support and join ISIS, one of the world’s most brutal terrorist organizations. This indictment reflects our commitment to hold accountable anyone who attempts to aid terrorists,” said U.S. Attorney Ison.

Special Agent in Charge Cheyvoryea Gibson added, “Mr. Pratt allegedly attempted to support a foreign terrorist organization known for its violence and human rights abuses. Protecting the American people and our communities remains the FBI’s highest priority. Through joint and coordinated efforts of our law enforcement and intelligence partners, as well as vigilant citizens, we will continue to thwart plans by individuals seeking to harm others on behalf of a foreign terrorist organization. I want to thank our joint Terrorism Task Force for their work in this investigation and for their unwavering commitment to protecting our nation.”

If convicted, Pratt faces up to 20 years in prison for each count of attempted material support to a terrorist organization.

The case is being investigated by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jerome Gorgon and Douglas Salzenstein.
