Video shows police arresting suspect for roadside aggression on Paseo del Norte

New Mexico State Police officers arrested Paul Marquez shortly after he allegedly shot at another car on his way to work.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – New Mexico State Police officers arrested Paul Marquez shortly after he allegedly shot at another car on his way to work.

The reason officers arrested Marquez so quickly was because they were right next to the car Marquez allegedly shot at.

A recently released video from NMSP shows how it all unfolded. The video comes from the dashcam of the other driver, Victor Chavez.

In the video, Marquez cuts to Chavez in a white SUV. Chavez says that was the first time Marquez pointed a gun at him.

“He pulled up next to me, rolled down his window and showed me his gun. I still had all the windows rolled up, I didn’t roll them down or anything,” Chavez said.

What Marquez didn’t know, however, was that there was an unmarked NMSP unit in the lane to Chavez’s left.

“I saw the black SUV that was a cop, so I accelerated to pull him over. I rolled down the window, honked at him, waved him over, and the guy {the suspect} pulled over to my right. He didn’t realize it was a cop I was trying to pull over, and from there he fired three shots,” Chavez said.

Chavez’s dashcam records the moment when police stop and eventually arrest Marquez.

“I was on my way to work and this guy I was in an argument with cut me off and almost attacked me. From there the situation escalated, but that shouldn’t have happened, it was my fault,” said Paul Marquez.

He says he pulled out his gun to scare Chavez.

Police officer: “What was going through your mind at that moment?”

Marquez: “Nothing. I just ruined my life and I’m probably going to prison forever, man.”

A video shows some of the damage caused by the shooting as police began searching for the bullets.

The officer said he fired two or three shots. Fortunately, no one was injured and the victim was alone in the car.

Marquez is charged with aggravated assault and shooting at or from a vehicle. He pleaded not guilty last week.

A judge released him from custody on conditions prior to a possible trial. These conditions include that he is not allowed to drive a car.
