Man suffers ‘serious’ injuries in shark attack on San Diego beach

A 46-year-old man suffered injuries described by authorities as “significant” after a shark attack on a beach in Southern California.

According to the city of Del Mar, the shark incident occurred around 9 a.m. on Sunday in Del Mar, about 100 meters offshore from the Beach Safety Center on 17th Street.

The incident prompted lifeguards to close Del Mar beaches to swimming and surfing within a one-mile radius in both directions from the incident between 6th Street and North Beach.

The victim was in a group of about a dozen swimmers when he was attacked. He suffered bites to his upper body, left arm and hand. His injuries, while significant, are not believed to be life-threatening.

Signs have been posted advising beachgoers that the beaches are closed to swimming and surfing. The water closure will remain in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday.
