Motorcyclist killed in crash with semi-trailer on NYC freeway

A motorcyclist was killed when the driver of a semi-truck crossed the road and collided with him on a Queens freeway, police said Sunday.

A 34-year-old man was driving an Isuzu semi-trailer truck westbound on the Long Island Expressway shortly after 8:32 a.m. Saturday when he suddenly moved into the left lane toward the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, police said.

According to police, the truck driver ignored road markings when he crossed traffic and moved into the left exit lane, where a 24-year-old man was riding a Yamaha motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, identified by police as Gregory Benning, hit the passenger door of the truck and was thrown onto the sidewalk.

In the accident, he suffered severe injuries to his upper body and right thigh. He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center, but could not be saved.

The driver of the semi-trailer remained at the scene and was not immediately charged.

According to police, Benning lived in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens.
