Police: Jacksonville woman tries to steal car with couple inside

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A Jacksonville woman is facing charges after attempting to steal an elderly couple’s car Saturday morning, according to Ormond Beach police.

At approximately 10:50 a.m., officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at an Exxon gas station at 1633 N US Highway 1 in Ormond Beach.

According to Press releaseWhen officers arrived, they found one of the victims grabbing Marvette Perry, 36, of Jacksonville, by the leg, attempting to stop her from fleeing in the vehicle.

According to police, a Good Samaritan saw what was happening before police arrived. He pulled out a firearm and threatened Perry at gunpoint to “ensure the safety of those involved,” but put the gun away when he realized Perry was not armed. The Good Samaritan remained at the scene and “reminded Perry that he was armed” until police arrived.

None of the vehicle owners were injured in the incident.

According to police, Perry resisted arrest but was eventually taken into custody.

One of the victims told police he got off Interstate 95 and went to a nearby gas station to use the restroom.

Perry’s arrest report states: As the victim attempted to open the driver’s door to enter the gas station, Perry opened his door, pushed the victim out of the way, and got into the driver’s seat.

The victim told police that he believed Perry was going to steal the car while his wife was in the passenger seat, so he held Perry’s leg until police arrived.

According to Perry’s arrest report, when investigators arrested her, they found her vehicle parked at a nearby gas station and had the keys with her.

Perry is charged with robbery, car theft without a firearm or other weapon, burglary with bodily injury, assault on a person over 65, and resisting an officer without the use of violence.
