Cairo:

An Israeli airstrike on targets near the Syrian city of Aleppo killed several people on Monday, Syrian state media reported, citing a military source. It is the second reported attack on the country in less than a week.

The attacks, which took place at around 00:20 (21:20 CET on Sunday), “resulted in a number of deaths and some property damage,” the source said, without giving further details.

According to Syrian state media, Israel launched air strikes on May 29 on the central region of Syria and on the coastal city of Baniyas. One child was killed and ten civilians were injured.

Israel has been carrying out attacks for years on targets in Syria that it believes are linked to Iran, where Tehran’s influence has grown since the country supported President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war that began in 2011.

In April, Iran responded by firing rockets at Israel after a suspected Israeli attack destroyed a building on the Iranian embassy grounds in Damascus and killed several Iranian officers, including a senior general.
