Consumer alert: New York State authorities warn of elevated lead levels in ground ginger and cinnamon from Badia Spices

NEW YORK (WABC) — New York authorities have warned consumers about elevated levels of lead found in certain ground ginger and cinnamon products.

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets made the announcement on Sunday after the contamination was discovered in ground ginger and ground cinnamon made by Badia Spices Inc.

An analysis by staff at the New York State Food Laboratory found that the product’s lead content exceeded the 1 part per million limit for spices.

Both ground ginger and ground cinnamon are sold in retail stores throughout the state.

According to the authorities, no cases of illness have been reported so far.

They ask consumers who may have purchased these products to refrain from consuming them and advise them to dispose of the products immediately.

Exposure to lead can cause health problems for consumers, especially infants, young children, pregnant women, and people with kidney disease.
