Maryland man arrested for running onto pitch at T20 Cricket World Cup

A Maryland man who jumped a fence and ran onto the field without permission during the T20 Cricket World Cup in Nassau County was arrested Saturday.

According to police, 31-year-old Ashwin Godker ran toward players after entering the field during a “friendly match” at Eisenhower Park. He was quickly arrested and no one was injured.

Although no games were scheduled for Sunday, the Nassau County Cricket Stadium at Eisenhower Park was on high alert.

Both the Nassau Police Department and the Federal Police have joined forces to protect fans and prevent potential threats. In addition, a mobile operations center has been set up near the 34,000-seat stadium. Everyone who enters the stadium is checked.

With the exception of a golf course, the park remains closed to the public during cricket matches.

Despite Saturday’s arrest, many fans say they feel safe. Some fans told News 12 they were disappointed to hear about the incident.

“Cricket is new to some people in the United States, it’s mostly played in Asia. People who don’t know the sport should respect it even if it’s not their game. Even if they don’t respect it, they have to respect the rules and the game,” said Madiha Rebman.

According to authorities, Godker was charged with trespassing.

Preparations were in full swing for the first official match at the stadium on Monday, with fans telling News 12 they couldn’t wait for next weekend’s match between the sport’s biggest rivals – India and Pakistan.
