ADOT Travel Alert: Closures of SR 89A north of Sedona begin June 3 due to rockfall project

As many residents head north due to increasingly warm temperatures in the valley, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) wants to remind motorists who normally use State Route 89A on the switchbacks in Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona to take a detour during the daytime the week of June 3.

A rockfall mitigation project will require closures and lane restrictions in the area over the next few months. SR 89A will be closed in both directions between Pine Flat Campground and Oak Creek Vista Lookout (milestones 387-390) Monday through Friday, June 3-7, from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

At other times, the highway is one-lane, and there are temporary traffic signals that allow traffic to flow in only one direction through the area. Motorists should expect delays and longer travel times when SR 89A is limited to one lane of alternating traffic.

Redirects: When SR 89A is closed, drivers in the Flagstaff area should plan to take Interstate 17 southbound and State Route 179 northbound to reach Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon. Northbound traffic in the Sedona area must take SR 179 southbound and I-17 northbound to reach Flagstaff.

The rockfall protection project and restrictions are scheduled to last through the end of August. Additional closures will be planned as needed as crews work to stabilize a rock face above SR 89A where a rockfall occurred in March 2023. ADOT will provide advance notice of any additional full closures.

A 10-foot vehicle width restriction is in effect in the work zone. ADOT and its contractor are working with local and regional safety agencies to maintain access for emergency vehicles and be prepared should events, including wildfires, require response.
