A 29-year-old police officer who was stabbed in Mannheim on Friday during an attack on a right-wing extremist demonstration has died, authorities said on Sunday.

The attack was carried out by a 25-year-old man with a knife, seriously injuring six people, police in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, where Mannheim is located, said.

“He stabbed the police officer several times in the head,” the police statement said. The police officer underwent emergency surgery immediately after the attack and was placed in an artificial coma, but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

The police shot the attacker and injured him.

A live stream from downtown Mannheim on Friday showed Islamophobe Michael Stürzenberger preparing to speak to a small crowd at an event organized by the Pax Europa movement.
